INVESTIGATIONS OF STRENGTH, MORPHOMETRY AND DYNAMICS OF ICE IN ENGINEER’S TASKS AT DEVELOPMENT OF SHELF IN FREEZING SEAS
New and improved methods of study of sea ice properties and definition its physical-mechanical parameters as initial data for evaluation of normative values of ice loads at design of marine engineer structures are considered. Evaluation of morphometry characteristics of ice using thermal drilling devices increased essentially effectiveness of study of internal structure of ridged features. Approaches to definition of the ice strength in its natural state with techniques of borehole jack are performed. Dynamic events connected with an impact of ridges and icebergs onto sea bottom are studied. The obtained data can be used for practical application in the tasks of dynamic effect of ice onto marine structures, bottom and coast.

The models and methods of forecasts comprise the basis of technologies using the modern geo-information systems. The sea hydrological forecasts of various periods of advance are shown to be the obligatory component of the specialized hydrometeorological support of economic activities in the Arctic in modern conditions. The Ice Conditionsin the Grenfjorden Bay (Svalbard) during 1974–2008 | 29 | | 13.05.2010 B.V.IVANOV, D.M.JURAVSKI THE ICE CONDITIONS IN THE GRENFJORDEN BAY (SVALBARD) DURING 1974–2008 The results of investigations of multiyear variability of an ice conditions in the Grenfjorden Bay (Svalbard) for period 1974–2008 are presented in the paper. The variability of month and year average characteristics of air and water surface layers were analyzed for determination of relationships. The data of standard observations from Barentsburg meteostation were used. The conclusion about total softening of ice and climate conditions in the Grenfjorden Bay in the last quarter of XX and first decade of XXI century is done. Hydrooptical Characteristics of the Kara and Laptev Seas | 35 | | 13.05.2010 R.E.VLASENKOV, A.P.MAKSHTAS HYDROOPTICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE KARA AND LAPTEV SEAS Based on the data of experimental investigations executed in open waters of the Kara and Laptev Seas on the board of research vessel «Ivan Petrov» in 2007 and 2008 the spatial distributions of suspended matter had been obtained and attenuation coefficients for photo-synthetic radiation (PAR) had been calculated. Climate change in the Arctic and Antarctic – result of natural causes | 52 | | 20.01.2010 I.E.FROLOV, Z.M.GUDKOVICH, V.P.KARKLIN, V.M.SMOLYANITSKY CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE ARCTIC AND ANTARCTIC – RESULT OF NATURAL CAUSES Meteorological and ice observations indicate that during the XX century the Earth underwent a process of warming, which during some periods was interrupted by cooling over large areas. The challenge of preventing adverse effects of climate change requires identification of the main causes of this phenomenon. Many climatologists believe that it is caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases of anthropogenic origin in the atmosphere. However, our recent studies suggest that ongoing climatic changes are a consequence of natural causes. To assess the true mechanisms of climate change, the most important features of this phenomenon are analyzed: the cyclical nature of climate fluctuations, its changes in time and space, relationship with the general circulation of the atmosphere (GCA), as well as incoming total solar radiation. All considered regularities can be explained in the proposed scheme of the natural mechanisms of climate change of decadal and centennial scales. Our projections, based on consideration of natural climate cycles, differ significantly from the results of numerical experiments with climate models. Instead of increasing temperatures and decreasing ice cover in the Arctic, we forecast a drop in temperature towards 2030 – 2040th and increase of ice cover, as well as preservation of the cyclic nature of changes which were characteristic for the XX century. Подчеркнута неоднозначность интерактивных методов картирования ледяного покрова. Сделан вывод о практическом отсутствии алгоритмов автоматической обработки спутниковых данных для морских льдов, применимых в оперативной практике без процедур интерактивной коррекции. Проанализированы возможности аппаратуры функционирующих в настоящее время ИСЗ для определения основных параметров ледяного покрова. Дана оценка методических погрешностей, возникающих при расчете характеристик ледяного покрова по спутниковым данным. Рассмотрены перспективы использования российских спутниковых средств наблюдений для мониторинга морского ледяного покрова. Hydrological regime of subglacial lake Vostok, as revealed from accreted ice studies | 77 | | 11.02.2010 V.YA.LIPENKOV, A.A.EKAYKIN, YU.A.SHIBAEV, E.V.POLYAKOVA, A.V.PREOBRAZHENSKAYA HYDROLOGICAL REGIME OF SUBGLACIAL LAKE VOSTOK, AS REVEALED FROM ACCRETED ICE STUDIES Based on the data of ice core analyses, we have determined the components of mass and water isotopic budgets of Lake Vostok and evaluated contributions of the two main water sources (the bottom ice melting and the hydrothermal waters) to the hydrological regime of the subglacial lake. It is shown that the annual hydrothermal water discharge (2.8-5.5 mt of water per year) is one order of magnitude smaller than the rate of melt water inflow in the northern part of the lake. On the warming over the Antarctic Peninsula | 90 | | 14.04.2010 V.YE.LAGUN, A.V.KLEPIKOV, A.I.DANILOV, A.I.KOROTKOV ON THE WARMING OVER THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA Analysis of warming process over Antarctic Peninsula due to combined atmosphere-ocean-ice interaction is presented. Remarkable regional warming in the near surface air and in the middle atmosphere is accompanied by cooling of low stratosphere, by dropping of surface pressure and intra-monthly air temperature dispersion, by cloudy cover increasing, by shortening of ice cover period, by thinning of sea ice and changing in the local ecosystems. Possible causes of the warming, connected with large scale circulation of the atmosphere and ocean are considered. PC-index as an indicator of the solar wind energy incoming into the magnetosphere | 102 | | 22.03.2010 О.А.ТROSHICHEV PC-INDEX AS AN INDICATOR OF THE SOLAR WIND ENERGY INCOMING INTO THE MAGNETOSPHERE The paper gives a short review of the experimental results, which formed the physical backgrounds for concept of the ground-based index characterizing the solar wind energy input into the magnetosphere. It is shown that the PC index properly responds to influence of the solar wind parameters, such as the geoeffective interplanetary electric field and dynamic pressure pulses, irrespective of UT times, season and location of stations in the northern (PCN) or southern (PCS) hemispheres. Case studies and statistical analyses of relationships between the PC index and magnetospheric substorm and geomagnetic storm clearly demonstrate that the PC growth always preceded to magnetic disturbances, that substorm onset and storm beginning occur when PC value exceeds the define threshold level ~ 2 mV/m, that the intensity and run of substorms is determined by the PC growth rate, that the storm magnitude (Dst min) is proportional to average PC value during growth phase, and so on. These experimental facts testify that the PC index manifests itself as a reliable ground-based indicator of the solar wind energy incoming into the magnetosphere.
