G.G.MATISHOV, S.L.DZHENYUK, A.P.ZHICHKIN, D.V.MOISEEV CLIMATIC CHANGES OF THE EUROPEAN ARCTIC MARINE ECOSYSTEMS Contemporary climatic trends of the Barents Sea water temperature and ice cover area as main indices of the European Arctic marine ecosystems are characterized. The response of ecosystems on the climatic changes of the different trophic levels (plankton and benthic communities, commercial fish species) is investigated. The detection of climatic component of the ecosystem dynamics is possible only if intentional and unintentional anthropogenic impacts (withdrawal by fishery, bottom trawling, introduction of foreign species) are taken into account. Keywords: European Arctic, Barents Sea, marine ecosystems, climate, water temperature, ice cover area, plankton, bentos, commercial fish fauna.

A.P.NEDASHKOVSKY, A.P.MAKSHTAS EMISSION OF CO2 INTO THE ATMOSPHERE DURING THE FORMATION OF THE ARCTIC SEA ICE On the basis of experimental investigations, executed in 2007–2008 on the drifting station «North Pole-35», the variations of total alkalinity and total inorganic carbon in first-year sea ice are analyzed. It is shown that in the main part of sea ice the relations between salinity and total alkalinity, and total inorganic carbon are the same as in the under-ice sea water. It is found that during sea ice growth its upper layers, including snezhura, are the source for emission of carbon dioxide to atmosphere. The results of comparison about СО2 emission from natural ice and its emission during artificial freezing of sea water under air temperatures –27 ... –37 °С are presented. It is demonstrated, that difficulty of separation of reaction Ca2+ + 2HCO3– = ¯CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O products is the important factor, controlling the emission of СО2 during sea ice formation The estimations show that the value of СО2 emission during growth of sea ice from freezing to one meter thickness is about 20 mmol/m2year and the value of СО2 emission due to sea ice cover formation in the Arctic Basin could be estimated as 3´1010 mol/year. Keywords: sea ice, Arctic bay, inorganic carbon, СО2 emission.

I.E.KOZLOV, V.N.KUDRYAVTSEV, S.SANDVEN SOME RESULTS OF INTERNAL WAVES STUDY IN THE BARENTS SEA USING SATELLITE RADAR DATA The paper describes the results of oceanic internal waves (IW) study in the Barents Sea obtained through the processing of satellite radar imagery for July-August 2007. In general 255 IW packets were identified on 59 Envisat ASAR images. Regions with maximum IW occurrences were identified, wave lengths and numbers of waves in IW packets defined. Interaction of tidal currents with bottom topography is suggested to be the main source of IW’s generation for the most of observed packets. Maximum number of IW packets was identified to the north-west from Franz Josef Land. Assuming IW generation by tides, phase speeds of IW were defined. Using dispersion relation for IW Mode 1 and calculated phase speeds of IW packets, estimate of mass content of upper mixed layer and its time evolution are given. Dependence of radar contrast of IW signatures on background wind speed, defining observability of IWs in radar imagery, is presented. Keywords: oceanic internal waves, the Barents Sea, radar images, upper mixed layer, nearsurface wind speed.

A.K.PAVLOV, B.V.IVANOV, D.M.ZHURAVSKY, V.TVERBERG WARMING IN THE BAYS OF THE WEST SPITSBERGEN: IS IT SHORT-TIME WEATHER EVENT OR STABLE TENDENCY? The historical oceanographic data for the bays Ice-Fiord and Gren Fiord were analyzed in the context of contemporary climate warming. Electronic archive is used, which contains more than 500 oceanographic stations, made since the end of XIX century to the present time. Analysis of temporal variability defined total increase of the maximum water’s temperature, that composed approximately 0,23 °С in the decade for the both fiords. The trends are statistically significant and describe about 46 % of general variability. The peak temperature which was recorded at the beginning of ХХI century, exceed the maximum of the previous century more than 1°. Кeywords: Spitsbergen, oceanographic regime, tendencies of variability.

A.V.SMIRNOV, A.K.KORABLEV INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MIXED LAYER CHARACTERISTICS AND ATMOSPHERIC HEAT FLUXES IN THE NORDIC SEAS Estimates of the relationships between the net heat flux and mixed layer properties in the Nordic Seas are examined. Oceanographic data are derived from the Oceanographic Data Base (ODB) compiled in the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute. Ocean weather ship ‘Mike’ (OWS) data are used to calculate radiative and turbulent components of the net heat flux. The net shortwave flux was calculated using a satellite albedo data set and the EPA model. The net longwave flux was estimated by Southampton Oceanography Center (SOC) method. Turbulent fluxes at the air-sea interface were calculated using the COARE 3.0 algorithm. The net heat flux was calculated by using oceanographic and meteorological data of the OWS ‘Mike’. The mixed layer depth was estimated for the period since 2002 until 2009 by the ‘Mike’ data as well. A good correlation between these two parameters has been found. Sensible and latent heat fluxes controlled by surface air temperature/sea surface temperature gradient are the main contributors into net heat flux. Significant correlation was found between heat fluxes variations at the OWS ‘Mike’ location and sea ice export from the Arctic Ocean. It is determined that the net heat flux increases for 10..20 W/m2 during strong sea ice advection periods that is 15..25 % of its mean value. Keywords: air-sea interaction, mixed layer depth, net heat flux, Nordic Seas.

M.S.MAKHOTIN DISTRIBUTION OF PACIFIC SUMMER WATER IN THE ARCTIC BASIN The study is focused on features of Pacific Summer water (PSW) distribution in the Arctic Ocean. Boundaries extensions, heat content, bedding depths of PSW are shown for a period 1950–1989. The anomaly extension of PSW boundaries are in 2009 caused by strong anticyclone activity. Two years observation in 2007–2008 illustrated the influence of atmospheric circulation over the Arctic on boundaries outline of PSW. Keywords: Pacific Summer water, Arctic Basin, boundaries of extension, heat content, layer depth, atmospheric circulation.
| | А.А.Piskun. The state of high-altitude base and quality of data on water level in the Ob-Taz mouth area | 97 | | Поступила 1 ноября 2010 г. A.A.PISKUN THE STATE OF HIGH-ALTITUDE BASE AND QUALITY OF DATA ON WATER LEVEL IN THE OB-TAZ MOUTH AREA The issue of high-altitude basis, the level positions in the Ob-Taz mouth area on the network of former Amderminsk UGMS, frequency control leveling of the datum marks and devices for measuring the water level are considered. The quality of data on water level was assessed, firstly, by analyzing the stability of the high-altitude base of gauges and the regularity of the primary control of device for measuring the water level, and secondly, on the basis of the dual analysis of water levels at the gauges with the levels in the adjacent waters of the Kara Sea and the runoff waters of the River Ob. Amendments to water levels for their reduction to uniform zero of a post are presented. Given the preliminary recommendations to improve the quality level observations. The results can be used in in the works for the State Water Cadastre and in estimates of the characteristics of long-term performance level. Keywords: tide gauge station, high-altitude base, datum marks stability, periodicity of leveling, quality of data on water level, Ob-Taz mouth area.
